Belfast bonfire photos to go on display in Sandy Row

A series of photos examining bonfires and loyalism in South Belfast are to go on display at the end of July.

The exhibition is the work of Mariusz Smiejek who has been working in loyalist communities since 2011.

He spent the past few months photographing bonfires across South Belfast, aiming to show the "reality" of the pyres.

He told Belfast Live: "I came to Northern Ireland and wanted to discover post-conflict societies.

"I came here in 2010 to do the research, to understand Northern Ireland. That’s how it started.

"People from other parts of the world have no idea what the peace process in Northern Ireland looks like."

Mariusz decided to focus this project on loyalism, and has worked around bonfires and the Twelfth.

He said: "Bonfires are the most graphic, after the Twelfth. It’s something that you don’t find anywhere else on the planet.

"I’m an observer, so it’s not for me to judge, but it’s a specific thing that gives communities - kids, youths, adults - something to come together for.

"When I see how many kids were around bonfires and how much time they spend, it shows how much of an impact it has on their childhood.

"It was really easy this year. I was working with a few organisations and was sponsored by Belfast City Council and Belfast South Community Resources.

"I was introduced to everyone to give me a chance to get as close as possible, to capture the atmosphere and the reality of bonfires."

The exhibition 'Boney' will take place from July 31 until August 1 from 9am to 4pm at Belfast South Community Resources in Sandy Row. It was supported by the Summer Intervention Funding through Belfast City Council.
