Belfast bar appeals for clarity after blocked drain floods their outdoor seating area

A Belfast bar has appealed for clarity as a blocked drain continues to flood their outdoor seating area.

The Deer's Head, which is located on Garfield Street just off Royal Avenue, made an appeal on social media asking for the problem to be addressed.

The bar recently opened onsite after a major investment.

In a tweet, the owners said that they have reported the blocked drain on "numerous occasions", but a solution to the problem hasn't yet been given.

They tweeted on Thursday morning: " @nidirect guys any chance you can sort out the blocked drain on Lower Garfield Street which we have reported on numerous occasions? We have just spent 18mths and vast amount of money investing in a very depressed area of Belfast so a little help would be appreciated."

Speaking to Belfast Live, a worker at The Deer's Head said that they were directed to speak to the Belfast City Council about the issue.

A spokesperson for Belfast City Council said: "Blocked drains are looked after by DFI [Department for Infrastructure] – we did become aware of it this morning via the bar’s social media and directed the owners how to report the issue to DFI to look into."

When the DFI were asked about the issue by Belfast Live, a Departmental spokesperson said that they would "make contact with the bar owner" to discuss drainage issues.

In a statement, they said: “Departmental staff are aware of this report and inspected the site on 9 August 2021 when no water ponding was found. Staff will revisit the site again and make contact with the bar owner to discuss any drainage issues.”
