Belconnen residents would be the first take part in a scheme to recycle food waste under a re-elected Labor government.
The collection scheme would allow people to put food waste into their existing green bins, which is expected to reduce Canberra's greenhouse gas emissions by 30 per cent.
Around 5000 households in Belconnen Town Centre would be the first to trial the scheme next year if the Barr government is re-elected.
The scheme would create up to 200 jobs across collection, construction and management.
Food waste makes up about 37 per cent of household garbage bins which currently goes to landfill.
If successful, the Labor government has also pledged to expand the bulky waste pick-up scheme to all Canberrans next year.
Under the scheme, which has been rolled out across Gungahlin and Tuggeranong, every household would get one free collection per year, up to two cubic metres.
It was initially planned to be available city-wide by 2024.
