There’s a new Aussie intimates label on the block, and they’re making waves in the inclusivity department. Being Wear is Australia’s first ever underwear brand to create garments with the mission of being gender-free and sensory friendly.
“I saw my daughter struggling to find underwear she could wear comfortably as someone with sensory issues,” Andrew Whittle, founder and CEO of Being Wear said in a statement.
When he realised that there was a gap in the market for gender neutral underwear, as well as styles and fabrications that were friendlier to neurodivergent individuals or people with sensory issues, Whittle decided to make them himself.
“What really struck me was when she wanted to wear boxers, traditionally made for boys, we realised there were even fewer options for her. In that moment Being was born. For all human beings.”

The brand surveyed over 4,000 Gen Z individuals across Australia, the UK and US and found 62 per cent of them believe brands should be offering more gender-free clothing options.
On Being Wear’s website, categories aren’t broken down into the typical ‘men’s’ and ‘women’s’. People can browse tops, bottoms and socks without navigating between gender. There’s measurements besides each size, so it’s easy to navigate which will fit you best.
Another issue Whittle wanted to focus on with his brand was fabrication. According to Being Wear, one in five Australians experience some form of sensory-related challenge. If clothes don’t feel right on the body, it can cause feelings of distress, especially for neurodivergent people.

Whittle wanted to remove any aspect that might make people experience discomfort, from scratchy tags to stiff seams. The brand eventually settled on modal, which is a breathable and lightweight fabric made from renewable beech tree pulp.

Being Wear Quarter Socks
Quarter socks trump all other sock heights, IMO, and Being Wear’s take are very reminiscent of the 90s. They also have a padded sole for extra cushioning and knitted upper for airflow. No stinky feet here!
