Being Corona: What it's like to share your name with a deadly virus

Sharing a name with a virus wreaking devastation across the globe is not easy; just ask Corona Newton.

The mum, who was named after the midwife who delivered her, says she struggles daily with abuse ranging from insults to her character to refusal to take her restaurant bookings seriously.

In fact Corona, 49, from Oldham, says her moniker inspired jibes even before the Covid-19 pandemic. But it's much easier to remind people of a cold beverage than a deadly virus.

The civil servant said: "People used to call me Guinness and Budweiser. That I could always laugh off. But this is more frustrating, especially when it gets aggressive," she told the BBC.

Corona said that no-one takes her seriously when she tries to book a table at a restaurant.

"People have said to me 'as if I'm going to listen to somebody named after a virus'" she added.

The mum-of-five has also been subject to nasty cold callers, who ask her to confirm her name by asking: "Is that the virus?"

She also said that while driving her daughter to a dentist appointment, she received a call from a man who began swearing at her.

"He screamed down the phone at me 'what does it feel like to [do] the world over?'" Corona said.

And when she attended a parents' evening, the teacher thought her daughter was being rude by referring to her as Corona.

Her name was given to her by her parents who were originally considering either Sarah or Caroline.

But when they were unable to come to a decision, they went with Corona, after the midwife who delivered her.

The name Corona comes from the Latin word for crown, which itself is a borrowing from Greek garland or wreath.
