Beijing Schools Set to Reopen

What’s new: The Beijing government has annouced a timeline for reopening many of the city’s schools for on-site classes, ending a prolonged closure to prevent contagion at the height of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Students in their final year of middle school will be able to return starting May 11, while high school seniors will be able to do so starting April 27, the city’s education commission said on Sunday. A timeline for other students will be announced later.

Why it’s important: Nearly all of China’s schools shut down during the outbreak to prevent transmission of the virus, with most classes moving online.

Beijing has been relatively late in reopening its schools compared with other regions. With its announcement, Hubei province, the epicenter of the country’s outbreak, will be the only Chinese region that has yet to announce a timeline.
