A man has been arrested after attacking pupils at a primary school in China, leaving 20 injured, officials have said.

Three children were seriously wounded following the incident at around 11.15am in Beijing (3.15am GMT), but their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

All the children were rushed to hospital where they are receiving hospital treatment, the Xicheng district government said in a post on social media.

Authorities did not give further details of the attack, but posts on social media said the children suffered knife wounds to the head.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and an investigation has been launched.

The attack is said to have been carried out by a worker at the school, according to reports.

A former worker told the South China Morning Post the suspect was a disgruntled former temporary janitor at the school.

About six police cars were parked outside a hospital near the school, according to a Reuters witness.
