What’s new: The city of Beijing on Friday called on all residents in its Dongcheng and Xicheng districts to get tested for Covid-19.
Residents were told to get tested between Friday and Saturday. Following the directive, long lines were seen outside many testing centers, which included both formal centers as well as ad hoc ones set up for the campaign.
What’s the background: Dongcheng and Xicheng districts make up the central area of Beijing.
The Chinese capital imposed a partial lockdown Wednesday after about a dozen new Covid-19 cases were detected, including two of the more transmissible variants discovered last month in the United Kingdom.
Both of the variant cases were discovered in the city’s southern Daxing district, which has also been the site of the recent flare-up that included nine confirmed cases and one asymptomatic case as of Tuesday.
