Beijing Reports First Covid-19 Case in 56 Days

What’s new: Beijing authorities on Thursday reported the city’s first coronavirus case since mid-April.

The 52-year-old patient said he had not been outside the capital in the past two weeks, and authorities are investigating the source of the infection.

The man was admitted to hospital on Wednesday afternoon with lethargy, chills and fever and a nucleic acid test returned a positive result.

What’s the context: Beijing’s 56-day streak without a diagnosed case of coronavirus has now come to an end, according to official figures.

Two of the man’s close contacts are under medical observation, and residents of his neighborhood in Xicheng, in the center of the capital, will be required to undergo testing for Covid-19.

This news comes after Beijing lowered its four-step public health emergency response from level two to three on Saturday, relaxing compulsory mask-wearing rules across the city.
