What’s new: China’s foreign ministry said Monday that American defense contractors, including Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Defense and Raytheon Co., are on a list of U.S. businesses and individuals that will face Chinese sanctions over arm sales to the Taiwan region.
Lockheed Martin was placed on China’s sanction list in July 2020 over arms sales to Taiwan. Zhao added that U.S. entities and individuals with “egregious records” in arm sales will also be sanctioned. He did not elaborate.
He urged the U.S. side to abide by the “one-China” principal and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, stop arms sales to and military ties with the Taiwan region, cancel planned arms sales to avoid further harming China-U.S. relations and cross-strait peace and stability.
The background: The U.S. Defense Department said Wednesday that the U.S. has approved the potential sales of three weapons systems to Taiwan, including sensors, missiles and artillery that could have a total value of $1.8 billion. The sale is awaiting the final approval from U.S. Congress.
