Behind Enemy Lines with Eagles Wire to break down Week 3 matchup

In order to get some intel on this week’s Lions opponent, I decided to go behind enemy lines. Eagles Wire managing editor Glenn Erby proved to be a great resource for tips on what Lions fans can expect from the hosts in Philadelphia.

What are the Eagles’ options in the passing game with DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery apparently out for Week 3?

If both players are out, Nelson Agholor will resume his role as a starter in the slot and will see an increased workload on the outside as well. (Editor’s note: Jackson is out, while Jeffery is questionable.) J.J. Arcega-Whiteside will get his first NFL start on the outside, along with Mack Hollins as well. Greg Ward could get a call up from the practice squad, although that seems highly unlikely now. Expect to see Darren Sproles get reps as a slot receiver as well.

The secondary looked vulnerable against Atlanta. Was that a function of the Falcons’ talent, or are the DBs an issue for the Eagles?

The Eagles’ vulnerability against the Falcons was partly a result of the Falcons’ talent at the skill positions and their continued struggles at the cornerback position. Julio Jones is a hard cover matchup for anyone; throw in (Mohamed) Sanu and (Calvin) Ridley, and it was going to be a difficult night regardless. Right now the Eagles are struggling to prevent the deep ball, something the Lions excel at.

How are the special teams so far?

The special teams are improving, and this is a group that the Eagles would eventually like to become upper-echelon around the league. Johnathan Cyprien and Rudy Ford were signed for their prowess on special teams and have done a nice job contributing in certain spots. Mack Hollins has made his name on special teams as well, adding to the depth on that unit.

What is one thing the Eagles do well that doesn’t get enough praise nationally?

Despite the lack of sacks through two games, the Eagles really get after the quarterback well. Brandon Graham is one of the highest-rated pass rushers, along with Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham. The Eagles do a pretty good job of rushing the passer off the edge without always having to utilize extra men by blitzing.

What do you see from the Lions that has you concerned?

Kerryon Johnson’s ability as a three-down back is a huge concern for a team that already struggles to cover the deep ball and opposing wide receivers. The Eagles’ nightmare would be for Kerryon and rookie running back Ty Johnson to get going early on, thus opening up the play-action passing game for Matthew Stafford and Marvin Jones.
