It feels like every time a quarterback could potentially become available, it gets Pittsburgh Steelers fans into a lather about the potential of finding the replacement for Ben Roethlisberger. The latest name is Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
The Lions and the 31-year old quarterback have agreed to part ways and Detroit will seek a trade in the offseason which will send Stafford to a new team in 2021. But unfortunately for many Steelers fans, that team isn’t going to be Pittsburgh.
The Steelers are heading into the offseason over $34 million over the salary cap with more than a dozen in-house free agents to deal with. There is no money to sign any premier players as long as Roethlisberger is on the roster. But even if Big Ben opts to retire or be released, this doesn’t suddenly cure the salary cap woes of the Steelers.
Pittsburgh signed Dwayne Haskins to a futures deal and still have Mason Rudolph on the roster. Look for them to sort out the future between those two this season and if neither guy emerges, then they will set a new plan in motion.
