But Thai League 1 runners-up True Bangkok United crashed out in the second play-off round after suffering a 1-0 home loss to Vietnam’s Hanoi FC.
At Singha Stadium, Lee Yong-Rae gave hosts Chiang Rai the lead after 12 minutes only for Zaw Pyae to equalise in the 36th minute.
Suriya Singmui regained the advantage for the Beetles two minutes later and Bill Rosimar finished off the visitors in the second half.
Chiang Rai will face a daunting task at Japanese side Sanfrecce Hiroshima in a one-off match in the final play-off round on Feb 19 with the winners advancing to the group stage.
At Thammasat Stadium, Hanoi FC’s Nguyen Van Quyet scored the winner from the penalty spot in the final minute to beat hosts Bangkok United 1-0.
The Vietnamese side will next meet China’s Shandong Luneng.
Thai League 1 champions Buriram United are the only Thai side to earn a direct entry to the group stage of the continental club championship.
