Beeston residents welcome long-awaited plans for public toilets in town

Beeston residents have welcomed plans to build public toilets in the town.

The proposals, submitted to Broxtowe Borough Council, would mean publicly accessible toilets are available for those living in the town for the first time in years after previous public toilets were demolished.

The toilets will be built near the Beeston tram interchange and next to the new Arc Cinema development.

Facilities will include separate male and female toilets, an accessible toilet and a changing places toilet for parents and children to use.

Sarah Gay, 44, who lives in Beeston, told Nottinghamshire Live: "I think it's marvellous.

"Finally they've listened to people here who have been asking for something like this for a long time. For a town of our size, to say there is no public toilets at all is ridiculous.

"They're putting them in a busy spot so they will be well used. I think it's fantastic.

"It's an exciting time for Beeston with the new development here as well."

Ian Davey, who has lived in the town for more than 40 years, said: "I can't see it being a disadvantage for the town and it should benefit the elderly residents especially.

"The only issue that could be raised is an increase in anti-social behaviour - you could find that it becomes a hotspot for drugs and drinking at night.

"But as long as they are looked after I don't think I have a problem with them being built here."

"It's a great idea," said another Beeston resident, who wished to remain anonymous.

"It will be used by a lot of people, just look how busy it is today. At the moment you have to go into Tesco's and use theirs or just go home and hold it!

"I was very happy to hear about the plans."

Councillor Teresa Cullen of Broxtowe Borough Council said: "I am very happy that under this new administration we are able to bring forward a proposal to bring a new, fully inclusive toilet block back to Beeston!"
