Beeston cemetery to reach capacity within three years after Covid-19 extension

The cemetery in Beeston will reach capacity and be closed to new burials within three years, the council has said.

In March, trees were cut down and space was made for additional burial plots.

Now, however, Broxtowe Borough Council has revealed the extension in March will be the last for the cemetery, and it is now expected to have a three-year supply of space available.

The cemetery will remain open to visitors who wish to pay respects at graves.

Several years’ worth of space is still available at the nine other sites in Broxtowe borough.

However the council is also looking into extending capacity at Stapleford Cemetery, which currently has capacity for around nine years.

The council says: “The cemetery opened in 1884 and is now nearly full for new burials.

“In recent years various initiatives have been undertaken to extend its capacity.

“This has been achieved by removing some overgrown trees and vegetation and by doing ground survey work to check for previously unused land which had in the past been considered unsuitable for burials due to the absence of historical burial records.

“A final area of the cemetery has been made available in the north/west corner by felling some trees that were originally planted as a tree nursery for the council.

“This was done in response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation to provide additional burial capacity. This work has created 80 new burial spaces.”

However based on average usage over the past five years, the council estimates this will only last three years.

A spokeswoman said: “The council has used as much of the land available in the cemetery as possible.

“The cemetery itself will remain open and will still be available for burials in existing or pre-purchased graves and cremated remains but unfortunately, we will not be able to offer any new burial plots after the remaining three year capacity is used.

“We are working to ensure the burial spaces continue to be available within easy access of Beeston at Chilwell Cemetery, and at the other burial sites in the rest of the borough.”

A report on the current status of burial grounds in the borough is expected to be considered by Broxtowe Borough Council’s Environment and Climate Change Committee on Monday, June 15.
