Beer, Burgers and Beethoven evening is set to hit the right note with Jesmond cafe customers

Beethoven and burgers might not sound natural bedfellows but the organiser of a summer event in Newcastle this summer is out to ensure they are an irresistible combination - especially with the addition of a beer or two.

A Beer, Burgers &  Beethoven evening is on a programme of Semibreve events which combine concerts with food.

Semibreve was originally launched by Annie Ball, a master concert pianist who also happens to be the daughter of well-known Northumberland artist Mary Ann Rogers, with chef Pia Castleton.

And the result of the pairing was The Semibreve Supper Club, combining a multi-course menu and themed live music.

Then, when Pia went on maternity leave, Annie said she has focused her passion for classical music on other spin-off events which also aim to dispel its elitist image.

And her range now range includes, besides her Beer, Burgers & Beethoven night, children's events called Once Upon a Piano which comprise a concert, interactive story-telling, craft and snacks - as well as Semibreve Yoga.

The Beer, Burgers & Beethoven event follows a successful debut in Wylam and will take place in Jesmond from 7pm on July 12 in a candle-lit environment in Caffe 1901 Bistro, in St Georges Terrace, where Annie keeps her grand piano.

She said: "I take listeners on a journey through Beethoven's life and music.

"He's one of my favourite composers and has such an interesting story - he was totally deaf by the time he was 26 and carried on performing, conducting and composing until the very end of his life."

She added of her event: "Beethoven loved drinking in taverns and, while the burger as we know it wasn't around at the turn of 19th Century Germany, I think he would certainly approve!"

Against a live piano backdrop, customers will be able to enjoy a choice of burger - beef, vegetarian or vegan - with fries and up to two drinks.

Besides beer, the options are wine, cider or soft drinks. The cost is £25 and to book see here .

Semibreve Yoga, which will be a workshop to live piano and including a lying-down concert at the end (presumably for the participants not the pianist), will take place on June 15 at Jesmond United Reformed Church from 10am until noon and again on June 27 at St Mary's Heritage Centre in Gateshead from 6.45pm until 8.45pm. The yoga  events can be booked by emailing  samanthacoe@me.com
