Beef farmer turned beautician aims high for new Northern Irish reality show

Northern Ireland’s first reality show has arrived and features none other than a beef farmer turned beautician.

BBC Northern Ireland’s  'There’s No Place Like Tyrone' focuses on farming families.

Ruth Hobson, 24, is one of the stars of the new series and the beautician hopes she can set a better example than traditional reality shows.

Ruth who is from Dungannon, Co Tyrone, loves tanning and doing her nails but doesn’t let that stop her from cleaning out chicken coops or feeding cattle.

She is heading on the programme to show girls that being themselves is enough and they don’t need to change to make it on TV.

She told the Irish Sun: “It’s nice to be able to portray real life. A lot of girls nowadays are often afraid to get their hands dirty now and it’s nice to be able to show you can get up and get stuck into a bit of muck and it’s good to get outdoors.

“Everyone is glued to their phones nowadays and it’s all social media, so it’s nice to show people you can have craic going out and doing country activities and it’s good to show a better example for girls.”

The show aired last Monday and showed Ruth ditching the salon and farm to bring her mates to a shooting range.

Ruth says that clay pigeon shooting eases her stress and she has been doing it since she was a teenager.

She said: “In the first episode, we did clay pigeon shooting. I’ve been shooting from a young age and I’m in a club. I’m trying to get my friends out to show them how to handle a gun.

"I always find being out on the farm you unwind too because you’re out in the country air.

"And because I was born into it, it’s natural for me to be involved. Beauty is a passion but farming is a lifestyle for me and it’s second nature to me.”

On a regular week Ruth switches back and fourth between her farm that is home to 60 cows and 18,000 chickens, and The Toning Room beauty salon.

Local clients told her about casting for the show and she, along with convincing her dad and brother, signed up.

The show is unscripted airs every Monday at 10.35pm.
