A note in the programme says that the latest from John Godber has been specially adapted for the festival. I don't know whether to be sad or happy.
The editing might well explain the broken backed nature of the piece, but at least it means you don't have to endure it for too long.
A play in two halves, it introduces us to Dave Cookson, a puny Yorkshire lad. It is 1974 and young Dave is working out in his dad's garage vowing to be really "massive" and get his own back on all those who took the piss out of his skinny frame and sticking out ears.
Fast forward 30 years and Dave is still all skin and bones but he is massive in a different way: he is a successful comedian and he has returned to his home town to let everyone know.
At least he is supposed to be a successful comedian. Part of the problem with the play is that the second half consists entirely of a stand-up set in which Dave is so unfunny that it is hard to believe he earns a living as a comic.
The other problem is that while the play pushes all the right emotional buttons, it does so without poetry or flair.
