Beechworth prison escapee caught, two other prisoners still on run

Police have caught one prisoner as they continue to search for two other men who remain on the run after the three escaped through the window of Beechworth Correctional Centre on Wednesday.

Billy Sperling, 25, was arrested in Geelong without incident just before 8:00pm on Thursday, police said.

Police are continuing to search for the two men other men Thomas Smith, 27, and Geoffrey Pennell, 34.

Smith is serving time for traffic, property, drug and damage-related offences.

He has been described as Caucasian with green eyes, a medium build and about 187cm tall.

Pennell is serving time for burglary, theft, drug, traffic and damage-related offences.

He has been described as Caucasian with blue-grey eyes, a thin build and about 178cm tall.

Police have also released the image of a blue 1988 Mercedes sedan similar to the car the remaining escapees may be travelling in.

The car, with registration: 1G13BT, was stolen from Beechworth Everton Road about 3:20am on Wednesday.

Police have urged anyone who sees the men to call triple-0 or contact Crime Stoppers.
