Bedwas High School removed from Estyn special measures

A Caerphilly secondary school has been taken out of special measures.

Bedwas High School, which has more than 600 pupils aged 11 to 18, was placed "on report" by education inspectorate Estyn in 2017.

Among failings highlighted by inspectors included pupils making significantly less progress than expected.

Removing the school from special measures , which is the highest form of monitoring, Estyn said Bedwas High had made good progress.

Head teacher Stephen Diehl welcomed the move but said there was still plenty of work still to be done.

In its report, Estyn said that in 2018, the school’s performance compared favourably with that in similar schools at key stage 4 - GCSE years 10 and 11.

Rates of pupils getting five GCSEs A* to C including English and maths also improved in both 2017 and 2018 and compares well with similar schools.

And while there was a slight decline in the proportion of teenagers achieving five or more A*- A grades at GCSE or equivalent in 2018, the rate of pupils getting the top grades is still above other local schools.

Inspectors also said nearly all pupils are courteous and polite and most engage well in learning.

And the report lauded teachers for having good knowledge as well managing pupils' behaviour well and having good working relationships.

The school has also made progress in reducing its budget deficit.

Estyn said since the new head teacher Mr Diehl was appointed he has "established a clear vision for the school that places high quality teaching and learning at the heart of its work."

In a message on the school’s website, Mr Diehl wrote: " Estyn have released their report acknowledging that the school has made some real improvement in many important areas and have removed the school from any further monitoring activities.

"Whilst this is clearly a very important step forward for the school we will continue in our improvement journey ensuring that we provide the best possible educational experience for all of our pupils now and in the future."
