Bedminster Green scheme in Bristol requires 30 months of temporary road changes

Work to transform a huge area of Bedminster with thousands of new homes is about to get under way - and will require around 30 months of temporary road changes.

The regeneration project, labelled Bedminster Green by council planners and developers, could eventually see five different ‘brownfield’ sites on either side of the A38 main road between East Street and the railway line built on.

Work to improve public transport, walking and cycling and to install a District Heat Network begins this month (January 2022) and requires more than two years of temporary road changes.

The temporary changes to roads will be in place until the summer of 2024, equating to roughly 30 months of work.

The regeneration project is expected to start 'very early in the new year' after Bristol-based developers Deeley Freed announced they are to start the process of building a series of blocks of student halls.

Two other Bedminster Green developments have planning permission, both on the other side of Malago Road - but work has not yet started there. The first is for a 17-storey tower block next to Catherine’s House, and the regeneration of the St Catherine’s Place shopping centre.

The second is for a series of tower blocks up to 16 storeys high at nearby Little Paradise, which will also include a three-storey car park on the existing Little Paradise South car park, and 21 affordable homes built on the nearby North Car Park.

The final two Bedminster Green sites are at various stages of the planning process.

The fourth site between the railway line and Malago Road was refused permission and turned down on appeal.

The fifth and final site, for 350 new flats and homes around Bedminster Green itself, is currently in consultation.

These are the temporary road changes in Bedminster and Southville as a result of the Bedminster Green works.

Malago Road and Dalby Avenue

Malago Road and Dalby Avenue (A38) will be one way southbound only, from the East Street and Dalby Avenue junction to the Malago Road and Sheene Road junction.

Buses in and out of the city centre will be unaffected. East Street will stay open northbound for bus services and cycles.

Access to the Malago Trade Park

In order to minimise disruption to businesses, access to the Malago Trade Park will be:

  1. Along St John’s Street.
  2. Along St John’s Lane, with the road closure temporarily removed, southbound only.
  3. One way southbound along Malago Road.

Dean Lane and Coronation Road junction

To prevent additional traffic using Dean Lane, access will be one way to vehicles southbound, coming off Coronation Road. There'll be no entry from Dean Lane onto Coronation Road, except for bicycles.
