Beddington fire: Smoke billows over London after huge blaze breaks out at recycling centre

Thick smoke billowed over London this morning after a huge fire broke out at a recycling centre.

Firefighters raced to the inferno at a new recycling plant in Beddington, Sutton, shortly before 10.30am on Thursday.

Images posted on social media show a big plume of smoke rising into the air, which could be seen for miles in south London.

A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Multiple calls have been received about the fire, where a large amount of rubbish and a single story building is alight.

“The Brigade was called at 10.23am and fire crews from Wallington, Croydon and Norbury are at the scene.”

A spokesman for Viridor confirmed the fire broke out at its site in Beddington Lane.

He said on Friday morning: “The fire was extinguished last night and the fire service had left the site by 8pm.

"There were no injuries, no risk to public health and the EA was informed.

“Waste deliveries were diverted away from the site during fire-fighting efforts but these will now resume.

"The cause of the fire has not been identified but waste site operators know that it is most likely attributed to lithium ion batteries. These batteries are the main cause of waste site fires."
