Bedbug Infestations Are Rising Again, and Researchers Are Testing Whether the Insects Can Carry MRSA Bacteria

Bedbug infestations are climbing, late summer is when they are typically worst, and a research question that would have sounded far-fetched a decade ago is being taken seriously: whether the insects can pick up and pass along the antibiotic-resistant bacterium MRSA.

The honest answer today is that nobody knows. Bedbugs are not established disease vectors, and no study has shown them transmitting MRSA to a person. What exists is a laboratory experiment demonstrating that the mechanism is possible, which is a meaningful starting point and nothing more.

That distinction is worth holding onto, because bedbugs already cause documented harm through sleep loss, anxiety, skin reactions, and the substantial cost of getting rid of them. Those effects are real now and do not depend on the bacteria question resolving either way.


The Laboratory Finding That Started the Question

University of South Dakota researchers published an experiment three years ago using blood capsules and artificial skin, showing that bedbugs could acquire MRSA during one feeding and release it during a later one. The setup was artificial by design, which is what makes it a proof of mechanism rather than evidence of what happens in a bedroom. It is also not a new result, which matters when the finding resurfaces in coverage that makes it sound like breaking news.

Jose Pietri, one of the study's authors and now at Purdue University, told the Associated Press that follow-up research is needed to establish whether bedbugs actually spread MRSA to people, while noting the finding "changes the perspective of what bedbugs do."

Two things would have to be shown before this became a household concern. First, bedbugs in real infestations carry MRSA at meaningful rates. Second, people acquire infections from them rather than from the far more common routes of skin-to-skin contact and contaminated surfaces. Neither has been demonstrated.

There is a plausible confounder worth naming. Bedbug bites itch; scratching breaks the skin, and broken skin is an entry point for bacteria a person is already carrying. An association between infestations and skin infections, if one turns up, would not by itself mean the insects delivered the bacteria. Distinguishing those two pathways would require sampling insects and patients from the same households and comparing bacterial strains, work that has not been published.


Insecticide Resistance Explains the Comeback

Bedbug populations in developed countries collapsed after the Second World War under widespread DDT use. The Environmental Protection Agency banned that pesticide for most uses in 1972, citing evidence it was harming animals and posed a potential risk to people.

By then, the insects had already begun to develop resistance, and they had continued to do so against the compounds that replaced them. Researchers describe resistance as the main driver of the resurgence in recent decades, which is why over-the-counter sprays so often fail while the infestation continues. Pietri has cautioned that randomly blasting chemicals is unlikely to work because insects are often resistant to first-line insecticides.

How much more common they are is harder to pin down than it should be. Infestation rankings generally come from pest control industry reports, which reflect where people call an exterminator rather than where the insects actually are.

Because resistance limits chemical control, professional treatment increasingly relies on alternatives. Silica dust absorbs the insects' body moisture, killing them. Sustained dry heat kills eggs as well as adults, but it must reach at least 122 degrees Fahrenheit and can damage furniture, artwork, and other possessions, so it must be done by professionals, the Associated Press reported. Both cost money, and neither is something a household can improvise safely.


The Health Effects That Are Already Established

Bites typically appear as itchy welts, often in a line or cluster on skin exposed during sleep. Some people react barely at all, and some react strongly, which is one reason infestations go unnoticed for weeks. Scratching can lead to secondary bacterial skin infection, and severe allergic reactions are uncommon but documented.

The larger toll is frequently psychological. Insomnia, hypervigilance at bedtime, and anxiety are well described among people living with an active infestation, and the stigma discourages people from telling neighbors, landlords, or employers, which allows the spread. Anyone whose sleep or mood is significantly affected should treat that as a reason to seek support rather than something to endure quietly. Infestations are not a marker of poor housekeeping, and they turn up in clean homes, hotels, and offices alike, which is worth saying plainly because the shame is part of what keeps them spreading. Detection is a practical skill. The insects hide in mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, and furniture near the bed, and the more reliable signs are small dark fecal spots on sheets and mattress piping, shed skins, and live insects about the size of an apple seed. Travelers can check the mattress seams and the headboard upon arrival, and keep luggage on a rack away from the bed. Christopher Hayes, an entomologist at North Carolina State University, offers the same advice in blunter form: do not panic, but do not wait either.


Cost, Renters, and Getting an Infestation Handled

The financial burden falls unevenly, and this is where the story becomes a housing issue. Professional treatment commonly runs into the hundreds or thousands of dollars, and multi-unit buildings require coordinated treatment across adjacent units because treating one apartment alone often just relocates the problem.

Renters should document everything in writing from the first sighting, including dated photographs and every message to the landlord. Responsibility for treatment costs varies by state and local ordinance, and many cities have housing code provisions covering pest infestations enforced through code enforcement or a health department. Tenant assistance organizations and local legal aid can explain what applies in a given jurisdiction.

Two mistakes are common and worth avoiding. Discarding a mattress or furniture before treatment often spreads insects throughout a building and costs money without solving the problem. Using outdoor pesticides indoors, or applying products to skin or bedding that are not labeled for that use, causes documented poisonings every year, a hazard also raised in reporting on treatment options and costs.

The research question remains open, and follow-up work will take time. Prevention advice does not change based on how it resolves.
