Business diversification is a path to success, but sustainable growth by using online expertise to help other media operators is more important, says BEC-Tero Entertainment.
The entertainment company believes in both business diversification and strategic partnerships with other media companies as a way for BEC Tero group to survive, especially for its online business division.
Chokchai Eaimrittikrai, group director of online business, said Thailand's media landscape has been disrupted and players need to work together.
The company is a back-end supporter for TV programmes such as talk show Rueng Lao Chao Nee and a radio station operator for Virgin Hits 95.5 and Easy FM 105.5. BEC Tero's online division covers Cat Radio, Major Cineplex's online ticketing systems, and Thai Post's online tracking business.
The TV line-up includes Myanmar X-Factor, Myanmar Challenge, and many soap operas and variety programmes.
The mission of BEC Tero's online division is to support every social networking operation, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, mobile applications and its own OTT platform, he said.
"The media industry today is oversupplied. We don't want to compete, but we will run our business by helping others with our expertise," said Mr Chokchai.
"It's a win-win situation -- we support them to make their online positions bolder and we can generate revenue from service."
He said diversification is insufficient because segmentation is the only way to survive in the short-term, while strategic partnerships allow for sustainability.
Mr Chokchai said BEC Tero's online division's experience, knowledge, expertise, hardware and software will help the company move forward amid the highly competitive media industry environment.
BEC Tero's online business accounts for 10% of the group's total revenue and he said that proportion will increase in the next few years.
The Digital Advertising Association Thailand reported digital ad spending in Thailand is expected to grow by 16% to 14.3 billion baht in 2018, up from 12 billion in 2017, boosted by integrated mobile devices and faster wireless broadband speed.
