'Beaver moon' to light up sky over Scotland next week - the best time to see it

Skywatchers will soon be able to catch a glimpse of November's first full moon, with the best views likely to come this weekend.

The 'beaver moon' will peak over the UK next week, space experts say, and comes as we mark the beginning of long, cold nights.

A full moon marks the half way point in the lunar cycle, when the moon is directly across from the sun.

Each lunar cycle takes around 29.5 days, and at each stage the moon we see in the sky looks different.

What is a beaver moon?

A beaver moon is the name we give to the first full moon in November, but it is also known by other names including Frost Moon and the Oak Moon.

The last full moon of the Autumn, tribes used to know it heralded in longer, cold nights.

When can I see it?

It will be visible for three days in total from tomorrow (Saturday) to Tuesday (1 December).

NASA have said the moon will peak around 9:30am on Monday, but it should be visible over the weekend too.

They said: “The Moon will appear full for about three days around this time, from Saturday night through Tuesday morning.

“The Moon will be close enough to opposite the Sun that it will pass through the partial shadow of the Earth, with 83 percent of the Moon in the partial shadow at 4:44 AM, the peak of the eclipse.

“The dimming of the Moon during this eclipse will probably not be noticeable without instrumentation, but for spacecraft at the Moon such as the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) the reduction in solar power will be noticeable.”
