King Bhumibol Adulyadej's philosophy of the sufficiency economy has once again inspired Somsak Sumpochanont to come up with new works created with a unique technique for "Beautiful Sufficiency: In Remembrance Of King Rama IX" at the Workshop Room 2 of Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center, until Feb 21.

This is his third solo art show and features a collection of 80 acrylic paintings on corrugated iron sheets (or sangkasi in Thai), more than half of which are new. Focusing on the philosophy's three key principles of being economical, simple and, most of all, beneficial, Somsak has chosen to create art on old, unwanted corrugated iron sheets. This unique medium has earned him the nickname of "Somsak Sangkasi".
His works portray Thai culture and traditional ways of life and also reflect the beauty of the sufficiency economy.
Also on display are seven large-scale medallion sculptures, also made from corrugated iron, depicting the late monarch in the same fashion as commemorative coin collections.
Motivated by his sadness to learn that the commemorative coins from his royal cremation ceremony was the last collection of his reign, Somsak decided to create his own collection in remembrance of the beloved king.
Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Center is on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 7pm.
