Beauty therapist's heartbreak after granddad dies with coronavirus in Spain

A beauty therapist in Bristol has described her family's heartbreak after her grandfather died of coronavirus in Spain.

Lois Harrison said her grandfather Tony Dix, 80, was in her grandparents' apartment in Marbella when he started to feel unwell and displaying coronavirus symptoms.

The 29-year-old said he was taken into hospital and, after ten days, he passed away on April 3.

"My grandmother couldn't see him or say goodbye," she added. "My family managed to find her a flight from Gibraltar to London so we managed to get her back.

"He was cremated in Spain and she brought the ashes back with her, we were so happy he was able to come back with her."

The family plan to scatter his ashes in the sea, in the same spot off the Exmouth coast in Devon where Ms Harrison's brother ashes were scattered.

"We are a very close family and we all like to be together, we are all going to end up in the same place," she continued. "My grandparents had been together since they were 15 years old and she will be 80 this year - they had been together their whole lives and she is heartbroken.

"The worst part is not being able to say goodbye and to think he died alone.

"It is difficult for us as a family as he was the head of the family, he was a big part of it."

Ms Harrison, of Shirehampton, said her grandfather was tested for covid-19 on admission to hospital and tested positive.

"It was very quick - we do not know where he caught it from," she said. "The doctors and nurses made sure we understood what was happening.

"He started by having the usual covid-19 symptoms, such as shortness of breath.

"We didn't think it was covid-19 to start off with as it was so early on - you just do not think it is going to happen to you.

"The doctors and nurses called us and they actually told he was improving, but the he just went downhill again and he ended up being put on a ventilator.

"It was a big surprise as we were all expecting for him to get better."

Ms Harrison said she was not an essential worker herself but works as a nail technician in Bristol.

She is now offering her services - which include manicures, pedicures and eyelashes to key workers to give back after their hard work.

She is asking for people's nominations at the moment, which can be submitted through her Facebook page The Daily Nail.
