Beauty spot trashed with fencing broken and laughing gas canisters left scattered

A beauty spot has been littered with laughing gas canisters and daubed with graffiti in a "wanton" display of disrespect, say villagers.

The mess was abandoned at Wick Golden Valley Nature Reserve in South Gloucestershire, and locals suspect it was the remnants of a group gathering.

A stone wall there known as Raven's Rock was sprayed with unsightly graffiti tags, for the second time in as many months.

A villager, who found the site in a mess on Thursday (July 9) and cleared it up, described the behaviour as "wanton vandalism".

The resident, who asked not to be named, said he found a "huge" number of nitrous oxide canisters - also known as NOS or laughing gas - and several mini barbecues left behind.

He also shared photos of a damaged wooden fence leading to a field, which was completely split in two.

The mess was left at a picturesque spot overlooking the pool at Wick Quarry, which has raised issues in past years with people trespassing.

Metal fencing around the border of the quarry - which is privately owned and inaccessible to the public - was pictured in a twisted heap on the ground.

South Gloucestershire Council had already urged people to avoid the area due to concerns about social distancing.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are aware of the graffiti and are arranging for its removal as soon as possible.

"As always, we ask that any antisocial behaviour is reported to the police on 101.

"We continue to work with the landowner and the parish council to deal with any issues on the site."

Wick and Abson Parish Council has heard of "various issues" at the nature reserve, according to the minutes of its last meeting in May.

The minutes stated that the council has been in touch with the police, South Gloucestershire Council and residents in response to the concerns.

Villagers contacted Bristol Live back in May, complaining of dangerous parking and mounds of rubbish left by visitors at the reserve.

A petition has been set up calling for its closure during the coronavirus pandemic, which has gained more than 430 signatures.

The petition's authors wrote: "Since lockdown was relaxed people have flooded to the village of Wick to the Golden Valley Nature Reserve, double parking, verbally abusing residents, blocking the main road making the village more and more dangerous.

"Not enough is being done to keep the residents safe."
