Beauty spot closed due to 'unprecedented levels of visitor activity'

'Unprecedented levels of visitor activity' has led to the closure of an East Midlands beauty spot.

Lumsdale Valley, near Matlock, has seen "unprecedented levels of visitor activity" following the recent relaxation of the UK's lockdown measures and it has been closed over fears that it is "impossible" to maintain social distancing there, Derbyshire Live reports.

Over the last few days, visitors have flocked to see the area's ponds and waterfalls, which are owned by the Arkwright Society.

But the charity, supported by Matlock Town Council, has now announced that access to the area will not be allowed until further notice due to "concerns for public safety".

A spokesperson for the Arkwright Society said: "The recent relaxation of the lockdown measures has led to unprecedented levels of visitor activity to this beautiful valley.

"Due to its natural limitations, social distancing is impossible to maintain for visitors and local residents and therefore in the best interests of all, public access to the waterfalls will not be possible until safe to do so."

The charity has urged visitors to not travel to the site as parking and access will not be available.

The spokesperson added: "Our local volunteers and supporters have worked hard to try and maintain safe access to the area, but public safety for visitors and residents must be our primary concern at these difficult times. The situation will be reviewed should circumstances change."
