Beauty picks: Naturally produced cosmetics

The market for naturally produced cosmetics is developing rapidly, as people become more aware of what they are putting on their skin. Natural and organic products can help reduce allergies and reactions to chemical substances, while many retailers are also introducing "green" or "eco-friendly" lines to benefit the environment as well. Here are some of the up-and-coming new brands that are helping to promote a healthier approach to beauty.

Elysambre

This French company sells natural make-up and skincare ranges that also aim to help the environment. They produce refillable and multi-use containers to reduce wastage and use packaging that is recyclable and biodegradable as well as chic. Elysambre's products can be purchased online from sites such as naturisimo.com and lovelula.com – but remember, you will have to buy the case as well as the refill first time around.

Naturally Gifted

UK-based Naturally Gifted sells natural cosmetics and handmade soaps that are "ethically sourced". Their website offers a selection of gifts that are eco-friendly and free from chemicals and preservatives, and the company aims to support local and family-run cottage industries as well as Fair Trade suppliers from developing countries.

Figs & Rouge

Figs & Rouge produce award-winning, petroleum-free lip, face and body balms that are made in the UK from 100% organic ingredients. The balms come in three scents – rambling rose, peppermint and tea tree and sweet geranium – and are packaged in gorgeous, vintage-style tins. Although they don't sell products through their website, they are stocked by Boots.

Priti NYC

This American brand sells a wide range of nail polishes that are free from toluene, formaldehyde and DBP. They also provide organic nail, hand and foot care lines, available through a small number of outlets internationally and online. Priti products are cruelty free and 100% vegan, and the company also works with a chemical recycling and disposal organisation, so you can recycle old nail polish bottles.

BabyBearShop

BabyBearShop is aimed at mothers and babies. The company is run by two mothers in the US, with the aim of providing an organic skincare range free from preservatives and additives. The containers list all the ingredients on their labels and feature "vintage storybook illustrations", with gifts wrapped in recycled brown and turquoise craft paper. They presently only have outlets in the US but products are available to purchase online.
