Beauty: grown-up glitter

My feeling is that the opportunities to wear glitter are so scant in adult life that one might as well embrace the six-week window where a little sparkle is entirely appropriate. That time is now. I separate glitters into two categories: Teenagers and The Rest of The World. In the first column are pastels, silvers, snowy whites and neon brights. In the second, dark neutral or jewel tones, ideally with either a black or golden base. There’s something about this group that just looks more sophisticated, mature, less difficult to wear. They look like your normal makeup, only all dressed up.

I generally prep for glitter with a creme shadow, blended with my ring finger to just above the socket (if yours is invisible, feel your way to slightly beyond the bone). The joy of creme is that if you receive an unexpected evening invitation, you can press a little loose glitter over the top – I favour MAC Glitter in Antique Gold (£17) and Barry M Dazzle Dust in Chocolate (£4.59) – and it sticks. You can combine both in one with Bobbi Brown’s Long Wear Gel Sparkle, £20, possibly the easiest smoky eye product I’ve ever used.

These glittery cremes in elegant shades are applied either as liner for a subtle nod to good times, or smudged over lids for a pretty wash. They’re wonderful, especially when layered over pencil and shadow for added intensity. If you’re already sold on glitter and feel inclined to self-gift, then frankly, Givenchy’s Le Prismissime Yeux Noirs en Folie, £40.50, a beautiful palette of nine perfect, black-based glitters that fulfil every possible party need, is what you must have.
