Beauty expert's warning against TikTok's popular foundation water hack

A beauty expert has issued a warning about a viral makeup "hack" doing the rounds on social media.

With the heat virtually melting our makeup off at the moment, beauty lovers have been looking for useful tips and tricks to keep their foundation base weatherproof. A recent hack has caused quite a stir on TikTok, known as 'the water hack.'

The trick involves squeezing foundation into a full glass of water, swirling the foundation and applying it to your face with a blending sponge to bring it all together for an apparently flawless look. Beauty experts Revolution have revealed how to properly follow this hack in order to hydrate your skin for a summer-ready look that doesn't budge.

However, they're warning foundation users to not follow the trend identically. The viral hack may look seamless on video, but it isn't applicable to foundations that aren't waterproof, or those that are oil-based. Even for those who have waterproof foundation, you'll end up losing a good amount of product at the bottom of the glass.

Instead, for a dewy look, Revolution recommend applying a 'very small layer of water to the back of your hand' with a damp sponge and mixing in your foundation until you reach the desired consistency. The Revolution £9 IRL Foundation is said to be 'oil-free, breathable, and smudge-proof' and is a good alternative for a dewy look if you don't want to use water.

Advising foundation users on how to apply the product, Revolution said: "When applying any kind of foundation, always use sparingly at first and build up to the desired finish to avoid looking cakey or causing the foundation to crease and look heavy. This way you can still add moisture to your foundation and reap the benefits of a radiant summer glow while minimising the mess and risk of too much water.

"We'd also strongly advise against undertaking this hack if your foundation is slightly lighter than your skin tone. Adding lots of water to your foundation can make it lighter, which could cause your foundation to look ashy against the rest of your summer glow."
