Beautiful pictures show workers putting finishing touches to Edinburgh’s NHS tribute floral clock

Workers have been snapped putting the finishing touches to the face of Edinburgh’s famous floral clock in West Princes Street Gardens.

This year's design, which was changed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, shows the city’s gratitude to key workers who have helped us endure the worst pandemic in living memory.

The team of three gardeners have been hard at work for four weeks on the design and pictures showed them putting the finishing touches to the clock face on Monday.

The clock face bears the motto ‘Stay safe’ and plants nearby spell out ‘NHS’.

This years design was originally going to celebrate the 350 anniversary of the Royal Botanic Gardens, but in early May it was announced that the clock would be redesigned as a tribute to key workers.

While the clock face and the NHS logo appear to be finished there is still a long way to go.

It will take the team of gardeners six weeks in full to plant the 35,000-plus flowers and plants used to create the clock, which will be in bloom until October.

Unfortunately the clock won’t tell the time as the pandemic has meant some important moving parts are not available.

The famous floral clock has been a landmark in Edinburgh city centre since 1903, when it was first created – the only one in the world at the time.
