Beautiful pictures from the Liverpool River Festival 2019

Liverpool’s iconic waterfront was taken over today as the River Festival 2019 kicked off.

Crowds took to the Royal Albert Dock, Mann Island and Pier Head today to take in a range of exhibitions at this year’s festival.

From giant urchins made from fishing nets and wine tasting to brass bands and disco parties, the festivities were entertaining for all the family.

Despite the on-and-off weather, there were swarms of people taking in everything the festival had to offer - including a man walking a tightrope at Mann Island.

The stunning installations and exhibits today join the already unveiled Gaia, the giant spinning Earth replica, and The Whale Song , the light and water show featuring an enormous humpback whale.

Throughout the rest of the weekend, there will be a range of different shows including the African Eagles acrobats, slapstick street theatre from The Birdcage Stage and a performance featuring giant Jenga blocks.

There is also a beach all set up at Mann Island for the whole family to enjoy, with face painters available to transform little ones into mermaids, pirates and all things nautical.

The River Festival runs until tomorrow, June  2.
