Beautiful 'out of sight' Yorkshire town with breathtaking views crowned a UK hidden gem

Nestled in the idyllic Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by breathtaking scenery is one of Britain’s gems.

The town of Hawes is perhaps best known for being home to the creamery that produces the world famous Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese.

However, it has recently been named in the UK’s top 20 “hidden gem” towns and villages and it’s easy to see why the small town has more than earned its name as YorkshireLive reports.

The thriving market town is one of England’s highest towns at 850 feet above sea level.

The picturesque town came sixth on the list and has a number of quaint cafes and arresting pubs down its roads and side streets.

Hawes also boasts a thriving Tuesday market and a number of local shops selling handmade gifts, collectables, sweets and books.

Hawes’ location lends itself to wonderful countryside walks and rock climbing day outs.

Woodland Trust is currently working on creating a new wooded habitat in the Yorkshire Dales for the endangered Red Squirrel.

In addition to this, just outside of Hawes you can find what is thought to be one of the oldest unaltered cotton mills in existence in Gayle Mill.

The mill featured on BBC2’s Restoration programme but was closed for repairs in 2018.

Any visitors to the charming village of Hawes could do worse than stopping off at one of the local chippies to try deep-fried Wensleydale cheese - the local delicacy.
