A fundraiser has been launched for a woman who sustained life-altering injuries when she was struck by a car on a busy road. Vania Tong, 53, suffered a severe spinal injury when she was hit by a car on June 19.
The incident occurred on the A547 in Meliden, Wales. Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene at around 6pm that evening, where they were then joined by the Wales Air Ambulance which airlifted Vania to the Royal Stoke University Hospital for specialist treatment.
Medics then delivered the devastating news that Vania had suffered serious damage to her spinal cord, which means that is unlikely she will ever walk again, North Wales Live reports.
In a post on social media Vania's daughter, Agnes, said that her "beautiful, caring mum" was on the way back from their local shop when tragedy struck. It is believed that Vania had been crossing the road at the time of the collision.
She is currently under specialist care at Stoke hospital as both she and her family try to come to terms with her life-changing injuries.
Vania needs surgery on her spine and is expected to remain in Stoke for at least six weeks while she receives specialist treatment. According to her family, Covid restrictions mean they are only able to visit her for an hour a day which means they are forced to travel back and forth to the hospital from North Wales.
A fundraising page has been set up to help the family cover travel and accommodation costs during Vania's recovery. A message on the page reads: "As we live in North Wales, this is a long journey. Covid restrictions mean we can’t be at our mum’s side 24/7 like we want to be, giving us only one hour per day, which is heartbreaking for us.
"We are kindly asking for any donations, however small, to help us cover the costs of travel and accommodation so we can be at Vania’s side as much as possible." Police have urged anyone who witnessed the incident to get in touch by calling 101 or via their website, quoting reference B088996.
