Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra will start the 2018 season with the "RBSO Classical Concert No.1", featuring one of its own star principals in the small hall of Thailand Cultural Centre, Ratchadaphisek Road, Thursday at 8pm.
Featured as soloist for the evening will be principal clarinettist Yos Vaneesorn, who has chosen contemporary Spanish composer Oscar Navarro's incredibly beautiful Clarinet Concerto No.2 as his showcase, a work very recently added to the core repertoire and which has grabbed the attention of clarinet admirers across the music world.
This richly orchestrated and tonally satisfying work was composed in 2012. It is quite brilliantly laid out for a virtuoso performer to display all sides of the instrument's character, both technical and lyrical.
Yos is one of the foremost musicians on the Thai classical scene. He was first appointed as principal clarinet with the RBSO in 1997, a position he holds to this day. During his previous years of study, he served as bandmaster and clarinettist with the Asean Youth Orchestra in 1994-95, and joined the Asian Youth Orchestra in 1998 and 2000. Advanced studies progressed abroad, where he was awarded full scholarships from Louisiana State University and the University of Missouri, in order to work toward achieving his master's and doctoral degrees.
Much admired Japanese conductor Hide Shindori will make a welcome return to conduct a rousing programme for this show, which will start with Bizet's Carmen Suite No.1 and conclude with Mozart's Symphony No.41 In C Major, nicknamed Jupiter Symphony.
Shindori has amassed a huge wealth of experience globally. In Japan, he has conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony Orchestra and Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra, while in Europe he has appeared with the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra and Sinfonia Varsovia.
Tickets cost 300, 600 and 1,000 baht (half-prices for students) and can be purchased from Thai Ticket Major (visit www.thaiticketmajor.com or call 02-262-3456).
