Beautiful charity-owned holiday cottage on Skye with stunning lochside views reopens after major revamp

A beautiful charity-owned white-walled cottage on the Isle of Skye with stunning lochside views has just opened its doors to holidaymakers after a major revamp with profits going towards animal conservation.

Gifted to the charity Born Free over 20 years ago, Cnoc na Gaoithe (which means hill of the wind) has been updated to attract new visitors.

Now available to book via holiday let rental agency Sykes Holiday Cottages, all profits made from bookings will go towards helping Born Free’s global conservation of some of the world’s most beloved wild animals, including lions, elephants, tigers and more.

Founded in 1984 by Virginia McKenna OBE, Will Travers OBE and Bill Travers MBE, Born Free works tirelessly to stop the exploitation and suffering of animals both in captivity and in the wild.

As well as rescuing and protecting wild animals across the globe, including the UK, Born Free also campaigns for legislation to improve the welfare of all wild animals.

Founder Virginia McKenna, who regularly frequents at the cottage, is also a renowned stage and screen actress, starring in the iconic film ‘Born Free’ alongside her husband and fellow founder, Will Travers. The film started their love of wild animals and was part of the inspiration behind the charity.

Enjoying stunning views over Loch Snizort Beag, the cottage also comes with all mod cons, three bedrooms a woodburning stove and a pretty window seat area offers a lovely spot to admire the views over the loch.

It's also a Walker's paradise, with various dramatic hikes up the surrounding mountains such as the Old Man of Storr, The Storr, Beinn Edram and Quiraing, all close by.

Managing Director of Born Free Foundation, Karen Botha, said: “We’re so excited to be reopening the doors to Cnoc na Gaoithe, inviting travellers to come and stay at the cottage whille also giving back to a great cause.

"It was a very generous gift made to the charity many years ago and now is the perfect time to invest in it to help support the vital work we do at Born Free.

“We have put great care into the renovations of the property, introducing contemporary furnishings and features while retaining its original charm. It really is great base for holidaymakers and we can’t wait to start welcoming guests.

“After doing our research, we decided to use Sykes Holiday Cottages to manage bookings and I’m so glad we did. After just launching on their website last week, bookings are already rolling in for this summer.”
