Formby beach

People visit from far and wide to visit the beautiful sandy beach with incredible sand dunes and grasslands areas. The area is home to a National Trust reserve and is a popular tourist destination during the summer months.

Formby Beach (Colin Lane/Liverpool Echo)

Formby has always been known for its lush woodland and picturesque beaches as visitors from across the country make their way to the sandy dunes looking to bask in the sun and escape life for a while. But the beach is also perfect to visit all year round, regardless of whether it is "tourist season".

Great reviews have been left online by happy beachgoers, praising the area. One person wrote: "Beautiful place to walk dogs loads of open space easy access to spacious beach." But while definitely popular during the summer months, this local beach is perfect for an autumn walk.

West Kirby beach

West Kirby beach was previously named one of 10 best in the UK and was the only one in Merseyside to be included on the list. It boasts a sandy beach, there are water sports to enjoy on Marine Lake, and the small town is a popular place to shop, eat and live.

It also has a rich history as the town's promenade was built during the Victorian era. As well as attracting wildlife, the historical Hilbre island, just an hour's walk at low tide, attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Ainsdale beach

Situated between Southport and Formby, Ainsdale beach was previously listed as one of the top 50 places to go with your dog. The area has been awarded an International Blue Flag, a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education that it meets its standards, on several occasions.

As well as being popular with tourists and locals, Bottle-Nosed Dolphins were captured by employees at Green Sefton passing Ainsdale beach last month. These are said to be less common along the Sefton coastline. The beach is also great for activities such as kite and wind surfing.

New Brighton beach

The popular seaside resort forms part of Wallasey in Wirral and boasts amazing views across the River Mersey. Whether strolling along the promenade, eating fish and chips out the paper or watching the waves crashing against the seafront, there are so many ways to make the most of a trip to this stunning seaside.

Nearby there's also a cinema and the Floral Pavilion if the weather outside is poor, or you can take part in the area's Mermaid Trail, making the most of a beautiful day. Having been popular for decades, the Black Pearl pirate ship - made entirely from driftwood - can entertain passers-by for hours.

Crosby beach

Crosby beach is another of Merseyside's popular beaches with crowds flocking on a gorgeous sunny day. Dubbed the perfect place to people watch, the stunning views are also enough of a reason to visit.

Not forgetting Anthony Gormley's art installation Another Place with 100 life-sized cast iron figures staring out to sea, some of which are submerged during different times of the day. With some of the UK's fastest moving tides, there is also a coastal path for those wishing to avoid the sandy beach.
