'Beautiful and strong' woman, 36, fell to death from balcony

An "always smiling" 36-year-old woman tragically fell to her death from a high-rise block of flats, an inquest heard today.

"Beautiful strong woman" Claire Sanders was found in the car park at Quarry Green Heights in Kirkby having suffered multiple injuries.

On April 2, shortly before 9pm, police received a call from the North West Ambulance Service to report that a female had jumped from flats, coroner's officer David Woodroofe said.

Ms Sanders was found at the bottom of the tower block, between the fencing and the kerb, Bootle Town Hall was told.

Bystanders performed CPR as she was described as unconscious and not breathing, but those efforts were stopped a short time later due to "injuries incompatible with life."

A friend spoke to Claire some hours before she fell, at about 3.30pm on the phone, and was worried about what she was saying, the inquest heard.

The pal, in her statement, described Claire as being "agitated" who was saying "she didn't know what was wrong with her" and was "not feeling right."

She could tell the 36-year-old had been drinking, it was said, which was "something which she had struggled with in the past."

The friend encouraged Claire to perform breathing exercised to calm her down and then attempted to coax her to come back to her home.

The statement added how "Claire had said she wanted to kill someone when she was shouting off her balcony...this was not like Claire at all."

After she calmed down, the friend left the flat at about 4pm after being with her for about an hour and a half.

A different neighbour also told police how, on April 1, the day before the tragedy, she heard someone shouting from a nearby balcony, which wasn't particularly unusual, it was said.

The witness said "it was almost as if the woman was arguing with herself."

Police have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

An officer who investigated the case said that, from accounts from friends, Claire struggled with mental health and alcohol issues, and paranoia.

Toxicology tests showed the alcohol level was at a level of "moderate intoxication" and there was evidence of use of an anti-depressant.

Claire's cause of death was confirmed as multiple injuries.

Coroner David Lewis described it as a "very sad case" and Claire had been in an "unhappy state of mind."

He said: "It's more likely than not that whatever was in her mind at the time, she was responsible for the fall which brought about her death.

"...I have heard from the toxicology evidence that Claire had been drinking to the extent of moderate intoxication and anti-depressant medication which would be consistent with her perhaps not being in a frame of mind which was conducive to taking proper care of her own safety."

Mr Lewis recorded a conclusion of suicide.

He extended his condolences to her family and the "death of a precious relative."

After the tragedy, a wall of stunning floral tributes built up at the scene along with teddy bears and heartbreaking messages where placed in the spot where she died.

One card said: "Rest In Peace Claire, so sorry you're gone.

"No more struggles and no more pain.

"Gone but not forgotten."

Another said: "Rest in peace Claire. Thinking of all the family at this sad time."

A message, which had been taped to the side of a bouquet, also said: "RIP Claire. Thinking of all the family at this sad time, especially Jack."

People have described Claire as "always smiling" and a "beautiful, strong woman."
