'Beautiful and happy' toddler killed by family dog despite them being 'best friends'

A baby girl was killed by her family dog after getting close to its food bowl while it was eating, reports say.

A’myrikal Hull was "best friends" with the pup before the tragic incident in Illinois on Thursday, according to local station WICS.

Cory Painter, the grandma of the baby's brother, said the animal had "never snapped" before the sudden attack.

The dog reportedly bit "beautiful" and "happy" A'myrikal on the head at her home in Springfield.

She was rushed to hospital where doctors battled to save her life on Thursday night but tragically could not be saved.

"The dog [has] never snapped before," Ms Painter told WICS.

"I was in shock since 1.30 this morning. The fact that she didn't make it crushed my soul."

Ms Painter said she had known little A'myrikal since she was born.

"A'myrikal was a very happy baby," she said.

"She just had these big beautiful eyes and a smile that would light up the room."

The dog, which the family say was a female pocket bully – a pit bull and Patterdale terrier mix – was given to Sangamon County Animal Control.

Police are looking into the animal attack, but no charges have been brought at this time, the news outlet reported.

A GoFundMe page was set up to help raise money for funeral costs, and had already passed its $5,000 goal by Saturday night.

In a post on the fundraiser family remembered her as a "precious" little girl who had just celebrated turning one.
