This year's Beaujolais Nouveau wine went on sale in Japan at the start of Thursday.
Although restaurants and retailers would hold events to celebrate the release of the wine produced in France up until last year, they refrained from doing so this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Nine varieties of the wine hit the shelves of a wine store in JR Shinagawa Station in Minato Ward, Tokyo, along with a sign announcing the start of their sale.
About 80% of the Beaujolais Nouveau sold at the shop will go to customers who placed orders in advance, which implies that more people are likely to enjoy the new wine at home rather than in restaurants compared to a typical year, according to the wine shop.
As people have fewer opportunities to drink at restaurants, the amount of Beaujolais Nouveau imported this year is expected to decrease 30% from the previous year to 280,000 cases, with one case containing 12 standard 750-milliliter bottles.
