Beau Lamarre-Condon’s Defence Lawyers Suddenly Withdraw Before Key Court Date

Lawyers representing Beau Lamarre-Condon, the former police officer accused of killing television presenter Jesse Baird and Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies, have unexpectedly withdrawn from the case.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, this change happened just before Lamarre-Condon’s scheduled appearance at Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.

The legal team, led by Alexander Terracini, told the court that they were stepping down after “an issue arose yesterday”. The court was not informed about the specifics of the issue, which Magistrate Christopher Halburd said was “appropriate” in the circumstances.

Lamarre-Condon, who is 29 years old, has been in custody for over a year. This is the second legal team to step down from representing the former police officer, per SMH.

Police allege he used his service-issued Glock pistol to shoot Baird and Davies in a Paddington terrace in February 2024.

The allegations include claims that Lamarre-Condon had become fixated on Baird, reportedly stalking him and damaging his car before the incident. Friends of Baird are said to have been told about a “shadowy figure” at the foot of his bed in the weeks leading up to the deaths.

After Terracini and his team were granted leave to withdraw, Sydney lawyer Ben Archbold was appointed as Lamarre-Condon’s new representative.

Members of the victims’ families watched the proceedings via video link.

The prosecution, represented by Brendan Donnelly, objected to further delays, stating in court, “Negotiations have been ongoing for now many, many months; there’s been [two] case conferences. The Crown is ready for this to proceed to trial. These murders allegedly occurred in February last year, further delay is undesirable in the circumstances.”

Despite the prosecution’s objections, Magistrate Halburd allowed a six-week adjournment to give the new legal team time to review the case. Outside court, Lamarre-Condon did not respond to questions from reporters, while Archbold said he was “grateful” for the adjournment and would make further comments after reading the brief.

Lamarre-Condon’s mother, Colleen Lamarre, attended court to support her son, which was noted as a rare appearance. Police claim that after the alleged murders, Lamarre-Condon bought surfboard bags from a shop in Miranda and used them to conceal the bodies, later found submerged in a dam outside Sydney. CCTV footage reportedly shows him buying a second surfboard bag on the day of the killings, and it is alleged he rented a white van to transport the bodies.

15 months after the deaths, Lamarre-Condon has not entered a plea to the two counts of domestic violence murder. The case is scheduled to return to court in August.
