Beatles legend Paul McCartney hails Scots street's Abbey Road tribute

Bothwell has Come Together to celebrate after Beatles legend Paul McCartney praised their scarecrow festival.

In a radio interview with BBC presenter Zoe Ball, Sir Paul was told

The residents of McGuire Gate got a little help from their friends to create their own take on The Beatles’ iconic album cover.

And the Abbey Lawn entry was a real eye-catcher, giving locals something to Twist and Shout About.

Zoe, who was discussing Abbey Road related to mark the 50th anniversary of the album release, told Sir Paul, said: “We saw a thing recently where they had a scarecrow festival and they had built four scarecrows going across the zebra crossing like Abbey Road. It was amazing.”

And the Beatles legend said: “Oh wow, I love it.”

He continued: “It’s amazing something like that just goes on and becomes legendary.

“I’ve often thought of just jumping out on the crossing and joining in with the people walking across.”

Zoe said: “Can you imagine that it would blow people’s minds?”

And he answered: “I know I would have a lot of angry taxi drivers behind me.”

The creators of the four scarecrows were this week delighted that their efforts have been hailed by Sir Paul.

Siobhan Drummond and her husband Stuart joined up with neighbours Ralph and Michelle Kirkwood to make the scarecrows.

And Siobhan said: “Our street’s theme was pop icons and we thought ‘Let’s do the cover of Abbey Road’. We sourced suits from the charity shops to finish them off.

“Our street was so busy and we had lots of people coming to our street to have their picture taken on the crossing.

“It’s actual quite surreal that Sir Paul McCartney has commented on it.”

Joe Mullholland, the scarecrow festival organiser, said: “The work our volunteers put in is astonishing, and it shows with the far-reaching recognition and comments from various celebrities, especially Sir Paul McCartney and Zoe Ball.

“It makes us proud of our town and the participation of our community members.

“It truly creates a community spirit and brings people closer together.”

And Joe added: “We are almost at the end of 2019 festival.

“We still have an event with best-selling author Chris Brookmyre still to come. This was rearranged for October 25 due to other commitments.

“Plans are underway for 2020’s 10-year anniversary, with early bird MusicFest tickets going on sale soon.”
