Beating Rangers is more important than league position, says Motherwell boss

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander insists his sole focus today is on trying to take three points from Rangers at Ibrox, and says where they are in the Premiership table at this point is "irrelevent".

The Steelmen are on a run of three successive Premiership wins, including their 2-0 triumph over Aberdeen last weekend, which left them in fourth spot ahead of the weekend games.

Should results go their way, there was some talk of them potentially going top of the pile, were they able to stun a 50,000 home crowd at Ibrox.

Alexander says that's not a target he was considering, ahead of this round of fixtures, and says it wouldn't matter at this point where Motherwell were at all in the table.

'Judge us at the end of the season' is Alexander's mantra, and he says that would be no different even if they landed in top place when the dust had settled.

Alexander hopes Motherwell can add three more points to their total (SNS Group)

He said: "The league table, for me, is irrelevant at the moment, it's the points tally. We need to keep adding points onto our tally.

"Being around there, or up there is good, but if we weren't up there I would be saying 'judge us at the end of the season' and I'm still saying the same, when we're in a good position.

"If [we go top] on Sunday I'll be saying the same thing, that we haven't achieved anything, that we haven't reached any of our targets.

"My target, and my team's target, and our squad is to win three points, nothing else.

"We have to take the things that might happen on Sunday into account and be ready to deal with that, but if we don't deal with the football side of it, we're wasting our time, so for me the only target is for us to try and win three points on Sunday."

Alexander expects a tough test against Rangers (SNS Group)

Alexander added: "Whatever else happens outwith that is not my concern, and we have to approach every game like that, because we won't always be playing in front of 50,000.

"We just want to keep adding to our points tally and improving how we play and the understanding that we need throughout the team, because they are a new team.

"Obviously we have players from last season, but there are a lot of new players, we didn't have loads of time to work them in pre-season, because of late arrivals, but I feel, I see, slight improvements each week.

"If you can win games while that's happening then great, but we're constantly keeping our eye on that improvement as individuals, on fitness, tactical understanding, and that togetherness and unity that we have."
