Beat the drive-thru queues with free app that tells you the quietest takeaway times

As the UK's lockdown restrictions begin to be eased off, many restaurants and fast food sites have begun to reopen for take-away.

Places such as KFC, McDonald's, Costa and Starbucks have been operating again through their drive-thru services - but the queues have been long in some places.

Costa had to close its Trafford drive-thru after cars blocked a nearby junction, while McDonald's fans waited for over an hour in baking heat in Bolton on Tuesday.

Now, a furloughed web developer has launched a free app that could help people to beat the queues.

Paul Hulatt, who was also behind the Supermarket Check-In app that was downloaded by more than half a million people, has now released his Restaurant Check-In app.

The app relies on users to keep it updated for others - diners can check in, and log details of how long they waited for their food and drinks, to let others know the best time to visit.

Paul said: "Given all the issues there have been with queues during the current crisis, especially at major fast food chains since they’ve reopened, I wanted to help.

"After being placed on furlough, I had decided to use my free time to keep my development skills up to date - and these apps are the result!

"None of this information was publicly available elsewhere so I came up with the idea of creating a way for people to easily ‘check-in’ to their local restaurant or takeaway after visiting or ordering, so that others in their local community could benefit.

"This kind of socially-generated content is a really great way of communities coming together and helping each other get through this crisis."

The Restaurant Check-In app is available for free through the Apple store and the Google store.
