Beat Rangers and start our survival fight, says Hamilton boss Brian Rice

Hamilton boss Brian Rice has told his side to start their Premeirship survival fight by taking points against Rangers on Sunday.

It's bottom v top at New Douglas Park as they host Steven Gerrard's runaway league-leaders, and Rice knows his side will need to be on top form to have a chance of an upset.

Accies were dealt a major blow when Ross County overturned a 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 on Wednesday, leaving them four points clear, although Hamilton have two games in hand.

But he says it's his job to convince his players that they're capable of taking the points against Rangers.

Rice said: "People always say going into the last five games 'oh, Hamilton will pull it out of the bag', but we don't want to go into the last five or six games being in a situation like that, we want it to start on Sunday.

"Let's start picking up the points now, as best we can.

"You can sit back against Rangers, but if they score early on your game-plan is right out the window.

"You can go and attack them and they'll score - it's what you make of it, it's our mind-set going into the game.

"Do we believe we can get the result, do we believe we can force a few mistakes, and do we believe we can stop Rangers scoring.

"It's my job to make sure the lads believe all that, and that's certainly what I'll be trying to do."

Rice added: "The DNA of this club is to fight for everything, scrap for everything, and make sure you've not got any regrets.

"All we can ask for is that everybody gives their best - players, staff, everybody - and I believe I have a group of players who do that.

"But we have to try and find a way to make it difficult for them, and find a way for us to try and win the match.

"Its not just a case of going out and defending against Rangers; with the situation we're in we've got to try and win football matches, and this starts this Sunday.

"Realistically, Rangers have to come here and be below par, and we've got to be on the very top of our game.

"That's never changed over the years when we've played the Old Firm, not just this season, and it just so happens that the very form that Rangers are on at the moment makes things very difficult for a club like ours to compete for 90 minutes against them.

"But it's something we've got to go and do, and I'll express that to the players.

"We've got to look forward to it, we've got to not have any fear about it, we've got to embrace the challenge that is going to be upon us not just this week but from now until the end of the season.

Rice says returning players can boost his squad (SNS Group)

"We know the constraints that we're working under, we know we can't compete with your Celtics and your Rangers when we're going to get players, but what we can compete in is heart, desire and effort, and that will not to get beat.

"Mentally we need to be strong.

"Take it on board, take it on the chin, and let's have a go."

Rice says it's possible that he might be able to bring in another signing if somebody becomes available, but he says returning players can also bolster his squad.

"The way the financial situation is with most clubs, I think we possibly might bring someone in, if one person jumps out at you that is available then we'll have a look at it, definitely," said Rice.

"But I'm really hopeful in the next two weeks that I'll have three or four players who have missed large chunks of the season and might be back.

"That will bolster everybody, because we're going into a run of games now on Saturday-Wednesday for a few weeks, and it's going to take its toll on the squad, as it is for every other club that's got the same fixtures.

"I should have some freshness coming back to help the lads out."
