Bears were ‘champing at the bit’ to sign Eric Weddle

The Chicago Bears were one of several teams interested in signing safety Eric Weddle, who agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Rams Sunday in advance of free agency.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Bears were hot on Weddle’s trail.

Chicago was among six teams jockeying for Weddle and, according to Breer, were eager to get Weddle to Halas Hall as his first visit.

Canter had two other teams, one was the Bears, champing at the bit to get the first visit. But now, they’ll have to wait. “From the onset, the Rams were the top choice for what we wanted,” Weddle says, citing the criteria. “There’s no denying that.”

The bigger nugget to pull from this is that the Bears were more than willing to move on from Adrian Amos with Weddle. It could be a sign that Chicago isn’t prioritizing re-signing Amos and could, in fact, view safety as a position they can upgrade.

With veterans like Landon Collins on the open market, it will be interesting to see what course of action GM Ryan Pace takes.
