Bears Week 4 power rankings roundup: Chicago hits rock bottom

The Chicago Bears fell to the Kansas City Chiefs, 41-10, adding to their franchise-worst 13-game losing streak. The Bears haven’t won a game in over 11 months, and there is no sign of things changing anytime soon.

The offense has no identity, with Justin Fields continuing to struggle with both passing and rushing the ball. The defense hasn’t been able to stop anything – giving up an average of 35.3 points per game. And the coaching staff hasn’t helped.

Author’s take:

The Chicago Bears failed on every level last week and truly don’t deserve to climb out of the last spot. But they didn’t allow 70 points so they’re spared for a week.

Our take:

If the Broncos didn’t embarrass themselves the way they did, the Bears would be 32nd. Even with Denver’s big loss, they travel to Chicago, winless, after giving up 70 points, and are still the favorites. That has to be a first.

Author’s take:

There have been better weeks in franchise history. Justin Fields seemed to throw the coaching staff under the bus before clarifying that he wasn’t blaming anything on the coaches, and then he struggled to get loose again in Sunday’s 31-point loss. The defense, now run by head coach Matt Eberflus after Alan Williams resigned, was even worse. The good news is that in Week 4 the Bears face another 0-3 team, one that lost by a bigger margin on Sunday. But if the Bears fall to the Broncos this Sunday, it will be hard to blame fans if they want to start thinking about going into hibernation until draft season.

Our take:

To throw the coaching staff under the bus, say you’re going to improve, continue to miss your reads, and then have no straight answers for the media after the game? This was an embarrassing week for Justin Fields. He needs to forget it happened and start from scratch before this season gets away from him.

Author’s take:

There is plenty of blame to go around with the Bears’ offense, which is performing worse than it did a year ago. Some receivers aren’t running routes the correct way, which has led to spacing issues that affect the timing of when throws should be delivered. Chicago’s playcalling has put Justin Fields in situations to make plays from the pocket often, and the quarterback’s struggles there are magnified during a stretch when the Bears have been outscored 106-47 in their first three losses. Since the start of the 2022 season, Fields has the worst QBR (25) and yards per dropback (4.6) from inside the pocket among QBs with at least 200 passes in that time.

Our take:

Playing the blame game doesn’t turn into wins – we saw that last week. The Bears weren’t going to beat the Chiefs, even if they had the Justin Fields of last season, but the Fields of last season would’ve kept the game closer. Thirty-one points is unacceptable. The regression of the Bears’ third-year quarterback with a lack of answers is worrisome.

Author’s take:

This team is a disaster right now with all the stuff going on. Justin Fields has regressed, and the rest of the group hasn’t helped him.

Our take:

It’s a disaster in Chicago, but it’s only been three games. The only problem is, I’m trying to remember the last time Matt Eberflus coached a competitive game.

Author’s take:

QB Justin Fields is 0-3 for the first time in his NFL career. Chicago’s been outscored by a league-most 59 points and outgained by 472 yards. But they host Denver on Sunday with the chance to prove they’re not the worst team in the league.

Our take:

Justin Fields has five wins over three seasons as a starter. Now, you’re asking him to finish the next 14 games with a winning record to make the playoffs? This is a tough feat, especially when this offense hasn’t been able to put points on the board. So much for that Year 3 jump the fans were expecting.
