Bears vs. Panthers: Montgomery shines in preseason loss

The Chicago Bears’ first preseason game is in the books, losing to the Carolina Panthers 23-13. The score is rarely indicative of how the team will perform when the games actually count, but there are always standout performers in preseason games.

The Bears’ player of the game is their top selection from this year’s draft, RB David Montgomery, who scored the team’s only touchdown and shined in limited action on the lakefront.

Montgomery rushed three times for 16 yards and caught three passes for 30 yards, including a 23-yard catch-and-run from QB Chase Daniel. He flashed his toughness and quickness in two drives in the first half. The former Iowa State Cyclone’s day concluded following his seven-yard touchdown run.

When asked by Inside the Bears’ Lauren Screeden on how it felt to score his first NFL touchdown, Montgomery admitted it was a “surreal moment.”

Showing the skills that made him a top draft target for coach Matt Nagy, Montgomery will likely receive more reps in the Bears’ next preseason game against the New York Giants on August 16th. Montgomery was selected with the 73rd pick in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.
